Happy National Puppy Day!

Speaking as a former puppy, puppies are awesome creatures, and continue to be awesome even when they grow into dogs. If you have one of your own I’m sure you’ll agree with me. We entertain you far better than all those electronic devices people carry around. More than once Momma has turned her attention from one of her shows to watch a particularly rousing round of puppy dragon. We’re really good at snuggling at all stages of our life.

Sometimes it’s rough having a brother.

Unfortunately, there are lots of puppies (and dogs) out there without homes of their own. They don’t have Mommas (or Dads) to entertain or to snuggle. I used to be one of those dogs. I ended up at the humane society at a year old. Even my bro started out without a home, although he found his a lot younger than me. We’re lucky our Momma decided to adopt instead of buying.

Some people think the dogs at shelters or rescues were abandoned because they are “bad” dogs. I’m not a bad dog! There are some really great dogs that end up at shelters through no fault of their own. My momma was told I had been given up because my former owner was moving and couldn’t have dogs anymore. I prefer not to speak about it. It’s tough switching homes. It took several months before I really could be myself again. Momma didn’t even know I barked until a few weeks after I came home with her. And she had no idea I’d “talk” to her until a few months later!

So on this day, National Puppy Day, give the puppy (or dog) in your life a little extra love. And if you don’t have a puppy or dog to love, visit some at a local shelter. If you’re ready for a new best friend, consider a shelter or rescue pup. We’re a really awesome group and have a lot to offer. Just remember, it’s hard to change homes so give us a little time to show our true personality.
