I have a new goal – to become an American Kennel Club (AKC) Trick Dog. How did I get to be such an ambitious and handsome Dachshund? Let me explain (about the ambitious part, I was born handsome).
Momma has this thing about us being well trained and learning all the time. Sometimes it’s a drag (like this leave it thing, seriously, why can’t I eat paper towels?), but sometimes it’s really fun. I’ve already taken quite a few classes even though I’m still under two years old.
I started in Basic Obedience, but that one was kinda boring. I already knew how to sit, lay down, and come (well, when there’s not a squirrel to chase). That class also stressed the whole “leave it” thing. We worked on “stay” in there too, and I’m really quite a pro at it now. Momma dances around me trying to get me to mess up, but I’m unshakeable. Not to mention the longer I sit there, the crazier she gets. It’s pretty entertaining.
After basic obedience I took two sessions of this class called Focus Fundamentals. There were a lot of big dogs in there that barked all the time. I like barking at stuff too, but I’m a little guy and it’s much cuter. These guys could have eaten me for breakfast. Momma said I had to take it because the dog trainer said I was “reactive”. I’m not sure who doesn’t react to things. Doesn’t everyone bark at bikes and joggers? If they don’t, they should. Those things move way faster than they should – unless it’s me chasing my sister around the yard. I learned some good stuff in there like “watch” and how to nicely pass the big dogs (even if they didn’t always walk nicely by me). I got so good at it that the teacher used me to work with the other dogs who were having some trouble getting it. Their mommas must not have had very good treats in their bags.
Finally, I got to the really good classes – Canine Freestyle is the best. Momma and I learned some really awesome dance moves in this class. Momma’s still working on her dance skills, but I’m pretty much an expert. If I could get a good dance partner, I think I might have a shot at some competitions. As it is I’m stuck with momma. Let’s just say some toes were stepped on in one session. I’ll forever be a little nervous about doing a side step with her. Is there anyone out there who would like a handsome wiener dog for a dance buddy? Here’s a picture of me on my last night of Canine Freestyle. As you can see, Momma’s camera skills are right up there with her dancing skills. She blinded me with the flash before remembering to turn it off.

Looking handsome, until Momma blinds me with the camera flash.

After blinding me with the flash Momma finally turned it off.
My next class starts in May and I’m super psyched about it. Momma says if I pass I can get certified as a Trick Dog. Finally. Someone will acknowledge my awesomeness in print. I’ll let you know how it goes, but I’m pretty optimistic since I already know some of the required tricks. I mean check out my high five. It’s already trick dog quality. Crawling, high five – it’s going to be easier than a walk in the park.
